QUADRILLE FRANCO-AMÉRICAIN FIGURE 1. French-Canadian, Reel (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A version in the first strain of "Little Beggarman" (AKA - "Gilderoy (2)," "First of May (3) (The)" "Red Haired Boy") by left-handed fiddler J.O. Albert La Madeleine (1880-1973, Montreal). The second strain differs from the "Little Beggarman" family of tunes, and researcher Jean Duval suggests it is reminiscent of a Scottish march. La Madeleine recorded the quadrille for the Starr Record company in 1927, accompanied by his son Albert, a guitarist and fiddler (playing fiddle on this cut), along with piano. According to researcher Jean Duval, this was the first recording J.O. made with his son Albert, who had just returned to Montreal after living with family in Cohoes, New York, for five years.
