REEL VICTORIN. AKA - "Galopade (5)." French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The reel appears twice in J.A. Boucher's rare volume Le Repertoire du Violoneux published in 1933, although the versions are not identical. The first, No. 84, is "Reel Victorin," a title researcher Jean Duval believes is associated with Victorin Ross, the maternal uncle of Alice Joubert, J.A. Boucher's spouse, probably a fiddler as well. The second version of the melody is entered as "Galopade" (No. 101), a generic title[1]. This generic titling is an echo of Duval's discovery of the tune in Boucher's unpublished 1927 version of the collection, where his "Reel Victorin" appears as simply "Danse."
Duval suggests Boucher's reel may be a distanced derivative of a reel known in Scotland as "Push about the Jorum (1) and in Ireland under the title "Captain O'Neill" or "Rattle the Bottles (1)."
