although variants and derivatives were also well-known to American fiddlers in the 19th century. Gauthier's version is distinguished by a ninth measure in the second strain, rather than the usual eight. As Ethnomusicologist Jean Duval points out, Gauthier played bowed triplets in both strains of the tune, usually considered an Irish ornament and not typical of early Quebecois 78 RPM recordings.
There were several Quebecois versions of the reel recorded in the 78 RPM era, including Isidore Soucy's "Gigue irlandaises (2) " recorded a year before Gauthier's recording[ 1] , and J.O. La Madeleine's and Jospeh Allard's "Reel du plombier " issued separately in 1929. See also A.J. Boulay's "Reel de la bombarde ," and Louis "Pitou" Boudreault's "2ème partie du Set carré à Pitou Boudreault ."
