ROLLING OFF A LOG [1]. AKA and see "Set canadien de Québec 1ère partie," “Up the River.” American, Jig (6/8 time). C Major ('A' part) & G Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was picked up (presumably from Cole’s 1000) by the Beaton family of Mabou, and popularized among Cape Breton fiddlers. French-Canadian fiddler biography:A.J. Boulay (1883-1948) recorded the tune as the first figure in his "Set canadien de Québec 1ère partie", recorded (with dance figures called in English) in Montreal in December 1928, while violinist/fiddler Percy Scott recorded it in Montreal in 1920 as the first tune in his "Jig Medley." Scott was an early Canadian recording artist, sometimes going by the name 'Happy Joe Jenkins' on recordings.
