ROMAN WALL, THE. English, Two-Step (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The 6/8 time tune is to be found in the repertoire of Northumbrian fiddler Adam Gray under the title “The Roman Wall,” from whom Peter Kennedy recorded it in 1954. It was either claimed by him or, perhaps more likely, attributed to him (it has also erroneously been attributed to Borders fiddler Willie Taylor). Gray was a policeman and fiddler from Haydon Bridge in the remote reaches of the Tyne Valley. Barry Callaghan (2007) points out the similarity with the Irish jig “Eavesdropper (The).” Another take on the melody can be found in French-Canadian repertoire with Joseph Allard’s “Gigue de la Débauche.” All seem related to the older Irish jig "Larry O'Gaff (1)/"Larry O'Gaff (2)."
