John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Joshua Campbell's 1778 collection (p. 49). It was reprinted by Campbell in his 1789 collection (as were a number of tunes from the earlier volume). The Royal Glasgow Volunteers [1], also known as the 83rd Regiment of Foot, was a British infantry regiment that served in the American Revolutionary War largely in garrison duty in New York City. It was created in 1778 and disbanded in 1783, shortly after the war ended.
