G Dorian (O'Neill): A Dorian (Breathnach). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The reel is usually known as "Eileen Curran's" in modern session repertoire. Paul Cranford (1997) finds O'Neill's "Sailor's Return [2]" to be a reel setting of Scottish fiddler-composer Robert Mackintosh's 18th century strathspey “Lady Dalrymple.” Set as a reel, in 1883 it was included in Ryan's Mammoth Collection as "Sailors Set on Shore/Sailors on Shore," in a setting very similar to the one O'Neill later used. The American tune “Paresis” is also a related tune, published in the turn of the 20th century Harding Collection, from which source Cape Breton fiddlers picked up the tune. “Maura Connolly's” is a related tune.
