Scott Skinner (1843-1927), the tune was published in both his Scottish Violinist (1900) and Harp and Claymore (1904) collections. Sandlaw is a place-name in the old county of Banffshire. The tune was recorded for the Library of Congress (AFS 07297 A01) by folklorist Helen Creighton in Inverness, Cape Breton, in 1944, from the piano playing of Mrs. Dan Rory McKinnon,
