SCOTS RANT. English (Scottish?), Jig (6/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The melody appears in the Supplement to John Playford’s (1623-1686) 3rd edition of his Dancing Master (1657). It was retained in the next Playford iteration of the Dancing Master, the second supplement to the 3rd edition, issued in 1665, but after that it was dropped from the long-running Dancing Master volumes. Scottish music enjoyed several waves of popularity in England for the rest of the century, into the next.
