SCOTSVILLE REEL. Canadian, Reel (cut time). Canada, Cape Breton. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD; AA'BB'CC'DD' (MacQuarrie): AABB'CCDD'. Composed by Allan MacFarlane. The melody was first published in 1949 in Gordon MacQuarrie’s Cape Breton Collection of Violin Music, according to piper Barry Shears. Composer Allan MacFarlane was well-known as a brilliant dance fiddler originally from South West Margaree. He died around 1939 and is buried at the cemetery at Christmas Island, Cape Breton (settled largely by immigrants from Barra, Scotland). Paul Stewart Cranford says the tune was a great favorite at the dances of the famous Cape Breton fiddler Donald Angus Beaton.
