Franco-American fiddler biography:Arthur Joseph Boulay (1883-1948) recorded this 6/8 time jig as the first figure in a three-part quadrille set in Montreal in December, 1928, released by Victor Records the following March. The recording features figures called in English by an uncredited dance caller. The tune, however, was first printed in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883) under the title "Rolling off a Log (1)," later recorded by New England fiddlers as "Up the River." Boulay's recording was predated by a nearly a decade by violnist/fiddler Percy Scott, who recorded it as the first tune in "Jig Medley" for the Apex label in Montreal in 1920.
