SHAM FIGHT. English, Jig (6/8 time) and Country Dance Tune. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title may refer to a military training event by the British army. One such vent took place during King George III’s visit to the military camp at Warley near Brentwood in Essex in October 1778. The day began with a review of the troops, after which the Light Infantry and Grenadiers ‘marched with the artillery through the woods towards Little Warley (followed by the whole line in two columns), where, as well as in the adjacent woods, several batteries were placed, and many manoeuvres of attack and defence were performed, with the continued firing of musquetry and cannon, to which the situation and variety of the ground were very favourable and afforded much pleasure to the numerous spectators’.
