SHANAVEST AND COROVOTH [2] (An Sean-bhest 's an Carabhat). Irish, Air (4/4 time). AKA and see "John Doe." D Minor/Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Petrie): AAB (Howe, Joyce, Mulvihill). “A faction tune” states Joyce, while Martin Mulvihill notes, “a faction fighting tune of the ‘Cooleens’ and ‘Black Mulvihills.’” See note for “annotation:Shanavest and Caravat (1)" for more. Paul de Grae [1] finds other cognate tunes in George Petrie's collections: "John Doe," "Is iomadha yeóman malluighthe do thill a dhóghadh" (Stanford/Petrie No. 1519), "Réltán leanbhach (An)" (Stanford/Petrie, No. 1520), and Canon James Goodman's "Raelthion Leanabhach (An)."

Source for notated version : - “(The Irish collector) Mr. Joyce, from his grandmother, aged 90" [Stanford/Petrie]; Joyce remarks he took it down from her in 1854, and that she told him she learned it in her childhood [Joyce]; Mulvihill lists Joyce as his source.
