SHEALING IN THE BRAES OF RANNOCH, THE (Bothan airidh 'm braighe Raineach). AKA - "Shieling in the Braes of Rannoch (The)." Scottish, Slow Air (3/4 time). G Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "The Shieling in the Braes of Rannoch is also given as acquired from the same gentlemen [Ed., his father's circle of friends], and more recently sung by Colonel John Ross of the 86th Regiment" (Fraser). Rannoch is a area in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, encompassing Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Moor. A shieling (or àirigh), also spelt sheiling, shealing and sheeling, is a hut, or collection of huts, once common in wild or lonely places in the hills and mountains of Scotland.
