"The Shieling in the Braes of Rannoch is also given as acquired from the same gentlemen [Ed., his father's circle of friends], and more recently sung by Colonel John Ross of the 86th Regiment" (Fraser). Rannoch is a area in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, encompassing Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Moor. A shieling (or àirigh), also spelt sheiling, shealing and sheeling, is a hut, or collection of huts, once common in wild or lonely places in the hills and mountains of Scotland.
