SHEEP UNDER THE SNOW. Manx, Slow Air (3/2 time). G Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. A traditional Manx air from the 18th century. The song tells of a farmer who has lost his sheep in the snow, and, when he finds them frozen to death he dies of sorrow. Walker (1924) thinks it one of the best Manx airs (“beautiful”), and says that it has “a tinge of expression not exactly paralleled elsewhere in the British Isles.
