SNAKEWINDER. AKA - "Snake Winder." AKA and see “Jimmy Ossington,” “No Corn on Tygart (2)." American, Reel (cut time). USA, Kentucky. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was in the repertoire of northeastern Kentucky fiddler Buddy Thomas (1935-1974), who attributed it to his mentor, Morris Allen. However, the tune was recorded by Kentucky fiddler Jilson Setters (real name James W. "Blind Bill" Day) as "No Corn on Tygart (2)" for the Library of Congress in 1937 . The unusual title "Snakewinder" may be descriptive of a dance movement; the word winder is a Kentucky term for a set of square dance steps that employs a winding series of movements (see “Damon's Winder”). Jane Keefer notes that a related melody is "Going down to Charleston."
