SNAPPING JIG. AKA - “Snapping Turtle Jig (1).” AKA and see "Saratoga Hornpipe (3)," "Queer's Hornpipe" (Pa.). American, Hornpipe (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The 'jig' in the title refers to an old‑time syncopated banjo piece perhaps associated with a type of solo dancing or perhaps with a derogatory name for African‑Americans, and does not refer to the Irish 6/8 time jig. The first strain of the tune is also to be found in "Old Time Straight Jig," "Away Back" and "Kitty O'Neill (3)." At some point the 'Turtle' part of Septimus Winner's title was lost, for a version was printed in Ira Ford's Traditional Music in America (1940) as "Snapping Jig."
