SPIRIT OF IRELAND, THE. AKA and see "Spirits of France (The)." Irish, March (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Curiously, the first strain is cognate with the second strain of a five part melody called "Spirit of New Orleans," printed in Ira Ford's Traditional Music of America (1940). Although nothing is recorded of Ford's source for the tune, it does not have anything of American vernacular character to it, and its provenance could be from Britain, Ireland or New England. The relationship between Ford's tune and "Spirit of Ireland" remains unknown."
