SPRIGS OF STRADONE, THE. AKA and see "Geese in the Bog (3)," "Mullingar Jig (The)." Irish, Jig. A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody, frequently heard in modern sessions as "Geese in the Bog (3)," appears as "Sprigs of Stradone" in the c. 1885 music manuscript collection of fiddler Francis Reynolds of Gaigue, Ballinamuck, County Longford, finds researcher Conor Ward. He also finds a version of the jig as "Mulligar Jig (The)" in the Reilly Family manuscripts, Toome, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim, c. 1900. Stradone is a village in County Cavan. A manor near the village, Stradone House, now demolished, was a late Georgian mansion by John Keane, with a two-story front, and a large return with an extra mezzanine story. It was once the seat of the Sheriff of Cavan.
A different jig, a version of "Rolling Waves (The)," appears under the title "Sprig of Stradone" in the c. 1865 music manuscript collection of the Gunn Family of County Fermanagh.
