STACK’S HORNPIPE. AKA and see "Tadgh's Ailment." Irish, Hornpipe (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Tadgh's Ailment" is a hornpipe cognate with an unnamed hornpipe in the repertory of Chicago fiddler Patrick Stack, called simply "Stack's Hornpipe" in Francis O'Neill's Waifs and Strays of Gaelic Melody (1922, No. 313). The tunes are not identical, however, and there is a noticeable difference in the third/seventh measures of each part of "Tadgh," which goes to the dominant chord of the key, while "Stack's" remains in the tonic key. The relationship between the two is quite apparent in the rest of the tunes, however. See also the related “Honeysuckle (2) (The),” perhaps also a cognate melody.

Additional notes
Source for notated version : - Patrick Stack (Chicago) [O’Neill]. Chicago fiddler Stack was originally from north Co. Kerry, and was the source for several tunes in Francis O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1903). He is absent from the famous c. 1903 picture of the Irish Music Club in the city, although another musician named Stack--perhaps a relation--Sergeant Garrett J. Stack, was present. Stack recorded in the 78 RPM era with playing partner piper Edward Mullaney.
