Annotation:Straight Jig (3)
Appearance
STRAIGHT JIG [3]. American, Straight Jig (2/4 time). AABBCC'. "Straight Jig [3]" is from the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Bellport, Long Island, musician and ship-builder biography:Isaac Homan, where it is titled simply "Jig". It is an early example of a syncopated, duple-time tune often played on the banjo and particularly associated with stage dancers of the 1880's. Homan adds the note "Titus is first part of this gig," a reference to an individual often mentioned in Homan's mss. as Titus or as "M. Titus," but never with a full first name. It is unclear if Titus variously composed or arranged the music, but it is obvious he was a musician of significance to Homan with whom he interacted regularly.
