SUGAR HOUSE. American, Hornpipe (cut time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Stacy Phillips notes this is a new title for an old tune. It is derivative of, and possibly cognate with, "Elk's Festival (The)" in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883). Contemporary fiddler Randy Miller found "Sugar House" in the music manuscript collection of fiddler John Adams Taggart (854-1943), born and raised in Sharon, New Hampshire, and a onetime orchestra leader and composer. His father, Phineas Taggart (1812-1892), was a fiddler and dancing master in the 1830's and 40's, who taught in all the surrounding towns. Phineas farmed 140 acres at the foot of Temple Mountain, with a splendid view of Mount Monadnock to the northwest.
