SURLY, THE. English, Jig (6/8 time) and Country Dance Tune. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The second strain is twice as along as the first. "The Surly" was first printed by London music publisher John Walsh in his Third Book of the Compleat Country Dancing-Master, editions of 1735 and 1749. It was also published by John Johnson in his Wright's Compleat Collection of Celebrated Country Dances (London, c. 1740).
