SURPRIZE, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appears in London publishers Charles and Samuel Thompson’s third country dance collection (1773). It was also entered into the 1788 music commonplace book of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner, of Norwich, Conn.
