"It was the tune used by street players to charm the biggest tips," remarks Robin Williamson (1976), although by what authority is not known. Certainly, pipers and fiddlers who could spontaneously (or through memorization) play numerous variation sets on a core melody have generally been held in high esteem by audiences and fellow-musicians.
