TEXAS QUICKSTEP [2]. Canadian, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is a Canadian adaptation of "Texas Quickstep (1)." The composition of “Texas Quickstep [2]” is credited to Canadian fiddler Jim Magill by publisher Harry Jarman and copyrighted in 1937 (identified as a "Breakdown"), however, this must pertain to the arrangement as the piece is clearly a variant of the Red Headed Fiddler's recorded version of 1928. Canadian radio and TV fiddler and entertainer Don Messer and his band played the tune on live TV in the 1960’s[1], but they had been playing it for some time: The CBC Program Schedule (Prairie Region) for Wednesday, Jan. 2nd, 1946, announced: "The Poppy Jig"--a brand new number by Don Messer, makes its debut on tonight's [Don Messer and His Islanders 5:00PM] program. Other numbers include "Lady Gardiner," "Texas Quickstep," "The Lamplighter's Hornpipe," with Charlie Chamberlain singing "At Mail Call Today" and "Roll Along, Prairie Moon."
A close musical relative, an untitled lancers tune collected from a Prince Edward Island, appears in Samuel Bayard's (Dance to the Fiddle, 1981, Appendix No. 5, p. 574). Another tune called "Elk's Festival (The)" is similar.
