THEODORE [1], THE. English, Country Dance Tune (whole time). A Major (Thompson): F Major (Dale): G Major (Wilson). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABA (Wilson): AABA (Thompson): AABBAA (Dale). Theodore was printed in 1790's exclusively in instrumental tutors for various instruments published in London by Cahusac, Goulding, Preston, and the Thompsons. In 1800 it was published in the country dance collection by Joseph Dale. London dancing master Thomas Wilson printed a version of the tune in 1816 in his Companion to the Ball Room differing only in that his transcription begins on the first down-beat of the first measure, rather than having the first note anticipated prior to the opening measure (as in the other published versions). The title may be associated with Mlle Théodore, a famous late 18th century dancer in the Ballet in Bordeaux. In 1783 she became the wife of choreographer Jean Bercher (1742-1806), better known as Dauberval, the Maître de Ballet at the time, who created La Fille mal gardée with her in the title role. La Théodore began her career in the Paris Opera, debuting in 1777, and performed in London at the King's Theatre for the 1781-1782 season to popular acclaim and positive critical reviews. She appeared in the ballet of Amphion and Thalia in the Patheon, London, in the early 1790's.
