THOMAS AND SALLY. English, Scottish; Country Dance Tune (cut time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA’BCC. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Edinburgh publisher Neil Stewart's Collection of the Newest and Best Reels (p. 66), variously dated 1761 (Glen) and 1775 (Keller et al). The tune title is taken from a two-act dramatic pastoral opera called Thomas and Sally; or The Sailor’s Return by English composer wikipedia:Thomas_Arne (with a libretto by Isaac Bickerstaff). The afterpiece was staged at Covent Garden in November, 1760, and was meant to be a rather short entertainment (it runs 50 minutes) given after a spoken play. "wikipedia:Thomas_and_Sally" is one of the few Arne works that survived a fire at Covent Garden in 1808, and it is occasionally revived. The melody was also included by Northumbrian musician William Vickers in his 1770 music manuscript collection.
