TULLA REEL, THE (Ríl na Tulaí). AKA and see "Cooley's Reel (1)" “Joe Cooley's Reel (2),” “Lutrell Pass," "Luttrell's Pass.” E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Reliable sources attribute the tune to accordion player Joe Mills, a member of the Aughrim Slopes Ceili Band in the 1930's and 1940's, who called the tune "Luttrell's Pass." Accordion player Joe Cooley was also a member of the same ceili band, where he picked up the tune. Cooley's influence and professional reach was greater, however, and the tune has become inextricably associated with him, so that the popular reel is almost universally known as "Cooley's Reel (1)" today.
