TURNHAM GREEN FROLICK. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody is unique to London publisher Charles and Samuel Thompson’s 1765 collection. At that time Turnham Green was a village on the main road linking London with the west where it grew in significance as a coaching halt on the road to Bath. Turham Green also referred to an area of waste land held in common that was, in the mid-18th century, rife with highwaymen. In 1776 a lone gunman robbed the Lord Mayor of London and his retinue. None of this lawlessness deterred several noble families from establishing country retreats here in the 18th century. Turnham Green" has since been incorporated into the city limits and is now part of Chiswick.
