TURTLE, THE. AKA and see “Bonny Kitty.” English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was originally published by Charles and Samuel Thomposon in their Compleat Collection, vol. 2 (London, 1765) under the title “Bonny Kitty.” It was re-titled for their vol. 3 as “The Turtle.” As with numerous other tunes from the Thompson’s 1773 collection, it was entered into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.).
