UNION JIG [2], THE. English, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The composition is credited to "E. Wippert" in William Campbell's "Book 16th of Strathspey Reels" (London, 1801), who, as researcher Paul Cooper finds, is Johann Erhardt Weippert (1766-1823), a German-born composer and harp player who became a naturalized British citizen around the time of this publication. The Weippert family, including subsequent generations, became part of the central London music scene, and were bandleaders, musicians, composers, dancing masters, and music publishers. Several compositions from various Weippert family members were printed by William Campbell, and a few others named for them. Campbell himself seems to have been on cordial terms with them.
