"Warley Camp: The Mock Attack", 1779. Philipp Jakob de Loutherbourg (1740-1812)

WARLEY CAMP. English, Jig or March (6/8 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Warley, near Brentwood, Essex, was the site of a 18th century Georgian era military camp. King George III visited the camp in October, 1779, staying at the nearby home of Lord Petre. He and the Queen reviewed the troops stationed there and were entertained by a mock battle, with the firing of musketry and cannon.

After the mock attack, which took place on the slopes of Childerditch and Little Warley Commons, the King was introduced to several officers who had taken part. He expressed his ‘great satisfaction at the appearance, discipline, and good order of the several regiments, and the royal artillery; and likewise his approbation of the manoeuvres which were performed.

The event was depicted in a painting byPhilipp Jakob de Loutherbourg (1740-1812), dated 1779.
