WASHINGTON BONNET. American, March(?, 2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. It is possible the title refers to the rotunda of the US capital building in Washington D.C., which was still under construction at the time Riley published his Flute Melodies vol. 3 (1820), having been delayed by the War of 1812 and the British burning of the city during the hostilities. The original Rotunda dome was less pronounced than the one familiar in modern times, which began construction in 1859. Riley also printed a tune called "Rotunda (The)" in his collection, which may also reference the construction at the time.
