WE'RE A' KISS'D SLEEPING. English, Scottish; Air and Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Rutherford, Young): AABBCCDDEEFFGGHH (Oswald). The air, variation sets and a final jig were published by cellist-composer James Oswald in his Caledonian Pocket Companion, Book XI (1760, p. 114), and also, around the same time, by London publisher David Rutherford in his Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 country Dances, vol. 2 (1760, No. 171, p. 86). "We're a' kiss'd sleeping" was also entered by Edinburgh fiddler and writing master David Young in his MacFarlane Manuscript, Book 2 (c. 1741, No. 154, p. 209). A few words of the old song were preserved in Scottish song collector David Herd, but are fragmentary.
