The tune is played in Ireland’s Sliabh Luachra region as a polka in the key of ‘D’ major (see "Tom Sullivan's (Polka)"). The alternate title “Spailpín Fánach (2) (The)” comes from Joe Conway from Rathmore, reports Alan Ward in the booklet to Julia Clifford’s album. According to the liner notes of John Kelly's recording, the source for the tune was Seán Ó Riada, who collected it from an old musician in West Cork. Kelly was a member of Ó Riada’s trad. ensemble, Ceoltóirí Chualann.
