WINK OF HER EYE [2], THE. AKA and see "Bold John O'Leary." Irish, Double Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The composition is improbably credited to one 'J. Hand' in Ryan's Mammoth Collection/Cole's 1000. Hand (apparently there were two, James and Johnny) is the attributional source for a number of tunes in William Bradbury Ryan's 1883 collection, and may have been a bandleader or principal fiddler. Many of the 'Hand' tunes, however, are Irish in origin. Francis O'Neill printed the melody as the air "Bold John O'Leary," evidently set to a song of that name. O'Neill did print an air in 6/8 time called "Wink of Her Eye (1) (The)," but it is a different tune, similar only in the descending melodic line of the first two measures.
