Collector George Petrie, in his Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland, said he had the tune from a “near connection: of his, who had learned it when she was young from an elderly lady by the name of Betty Skillin. Petrie thought the air a “common Anglo-Irish street ballad” and preserved only the title, and noted that the melody had a common ballad phrase construction: ABB’A’.
