BATTLE OF STIRLING, THE. Scottish, March (4/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'. The battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in 1297 by the Scots hero William Wallace, aided by Andrew De Moray, against the English invaders under Cressingham. The narrow bridge crossed the Forth of Firth and Cressingham foolishly allowed his army to be strung out across its length, which had been weakened by the Scots, and Wallace and De Moray slaughtered the vanguard and sent the rest reeling in disarray, killing Cressingham in the process. Wallace lost a subsequent more conventional battle, Falkirk, but then engaged in a guerilla campaign which eventually led to Scottish independence, though he did not live to see it.
