Biographical notes
J.A. Boucher published a collection of 114 tunes in December, 1933, called Le Répertoire du Violoneux. It is the only collection of traditional dance repertory from Quebec in the first half of the 20th century, and only two copies survive[1], prior to the reproduction by Jean Duval with the assistance of others in 2018 [1]. It is thus an extremely important source and resource for studying Quebecois music today. Unfortunately, despite exhaustive searches by m. Duval and others, exactly who J.A. Boucher was has proved elusive. He may have been the J.A. Boucher who was a symphonic double-bass player, but no definitive information linking him with the manuscript has surfaced, and there is no particular information that he was interested in or played traditional dance music.
