Biography:John Turnbull

John Turnbull (1804-1844), was a Scottish Presbyterian composer and precentor. He compiled A Selection of Original Sacred Music...Intended to form the Sixth Volume of [James] Steven's Selection of Sacred Music (1840). A selection of the songs and marches of amateur violinist and composer Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton (c.1740-1819), arranged by John Turnbull was published posthumously in Glasgow, (c. 1858).

From the Dictionary of Composers for the Church in Great Britain and Ireland:
Born in Paisley, Scotland, on 12 January, 1804; died in Glasgow on 1 November, 1844. Precentor of New Church, Ayr (from 1827) and St. George's Church, Glasgow (from 1833). Published Easy and Progressive Exercises in Singing and Reading Music. He also published a collection of the music of Robert Archibald Smith. He composed Psalm tunes, anthems, and songs, including "Jeannie Lee."
