Biographical notes
NOAH BEAVERS (1897-1990, Elkville, southern Illinois). Beavers, a farmer and coalminer, played for square dances since the age of fifteen or sixteen, and led his own square dance band for many years. He began playing the fiddle at age ten, stealing his way into the closet to play his father's locked-up instrument, and learned his repertoire originally from his father, brother, and local musicians. He won several trophies over the years, including third place in the Senior Division of the Illinois State Fair when he was 70 years old. In 1990, just a few weeks before his death, Beavers was notified that he had been awarded the Traditional Music Award by the David Adler Cultural Center in Libertyville, given each year to the senior Illinois musician who has made a significant contribution to the life of folk music in the state.
