Biographical notes

PHILIP GOODMAN (d. c.1910) was one of the last known traveling pipers from Farney in County Monaghan, who lived near Donaghmoyne. Goodman estimated he had a repertoire of 500 songs, and remembered the titles of 307, with reels making up about a third of the total. He attended and competed in the Feis Ceoil held in Dublin in 1897, and in 1898 and 1900 when it was held in Belfast. He brought with him a list of unpublished tunes (as required at the time), from which the judges would select tunes to be adjudicated. For a more substantial sketch, including the list of 307 tune titles he recalled from his repertoire, see Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin – “A Hidden Ulster” (2003, p. 468)
