BLACK HORSE (HORNPIPE) [2], THE. English, Hornpipe. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by Lancashire musician Ellis Knowles, perhaps for a pub with the common name of "The Black Horse." One such establishment called The Black Horse was a famous 19th century inn at Birdlip, Gloucestershire, that featured an interesting collection of fossils, ancient flint weapons, old coins, pictures and other curiosities in its public rooms. In an era with few museums, establishments like this were sure to draw patrons.
