Bridge of Portumna (The)
BRIDGE OF PORTUMNA. Irish, Reel. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. Composed by accordion player Martin Mulhaire, originally from Eyrecourt, County Galway a veteran of the Aughrim Slopes, Killimor and Tulla Ceili Band in his youth. He emigrated to the United States around 1960, and has long been a resident of Queens. The bridge near Portumna, Galway, spans the River Shannon. A wooden structure erected in 1795, but dilapidated by the mid-1800's, was replaced by a sturdier stone span that allowed river traffic to pass under.
