BWLCH LLANBERIS (Llanberis Pass). Welsh, Waltz or Air (3/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Llanberis Pass is in Snowdonia, north Wales (bwlch means a mountain pass). The tune comes from The Welsh Harper, vol. 2 (1848), a collection by harpist John Parry (1776-1851), 'Bardd Alaw' (Master of Song). Parry was born in North Wales and received his earliest training in music at the tutelage of a dancing master. He became the leader of a militia band, but in 1807 he moved to London to teach flageolet (an instrument then in fashion). Parry fashioned a career composing songs and music for popular venues such as Vauxhall Gardens and the London theatre, but maintained his interest and involvement in Welsh music throughout his lifetime.
