Colonel Smith's Lament
COLONEL SMITH'S LAMENT. Scottish, Slow Air (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by the great Scots fiddler J. Scott Skinner (1843-1927). Colonel George Smith Grant came into the Glenlivet distillery at Minmore in 1901, after the death of George Gordon Smith, his uncle. The Smiths detested the fact that some distilleries made their whisky with steam heated boilers. Distillers who employed such a measure should not be allowed to call their product Scotch whisky, he complained to the whisky commission, and received the legal acknowledgement that only he could call his product 'The Glenlivet,' although others could use it as a suffix. See also Skinner's tune "Glenlivet [1]."
