Adrain's Hornpipe
I have recently researched some Iowa fiddlers. There was a group of fiddlers that would gather at Frame Davis’ home at least once a year to celebrate birthdays and play tunes. Bob Walters was among that group as was a fiddler named Fred Ira Adreon. He was born in McLean Co, IL 5 November 1871 and died in Boone, Des Moines Co, IA in 1949. He was a meat cutter and made and repaired violins. Bill Peterson of Canton, SD says that Bob Walters learned Adrain’s Hornpipe from Fred Adreon. His last name gets spelled Adrian, Adrain, Adrion and Adreon. This last spelling is how most records and newspapers spell the name. He was apparently a good fiddler and won the IA Sate Fair contest several times. I guess this tune should be spelled Adreon’s Hornpipe. The reference above to Fred Stoneking on "Play Me Something Quick & Devilish" is a different tune titled "Adrian's Reel."
