CONSTANT LADY AND THE FALSE HEARTED SQUIRE, THE. English, Air (3/2 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The Plain Brown Tune Book dates the tune to 1720. However, it may be considerably older. It appears in the Roxburghe Ballads IX, 635, under the title above. lyrics are related to "A Brisk Young Sailor" and has some resemblance to "Sheffield Park" and the 17th century ballads "Nelly's Constancy; or, Her Unkind Lover" and "The Forlorn Lover." An American version was collected in Boonville, Indiana, in 1935 from the singing of Mrs. A.J. Hopkins, who called it "Love Has Brought Me to Dispair."
