M:6/8 L:1/8 Q:3/8=120 N:According to Chris Walshaw in the ABC transcribers' group, 'moldywarp' is a N:colloquial term for 'mole'. (Thanks to commenters who helped to decipher the title.) N: N:From dictionary.com, 'moldwarp' (no 'y') refers to the common European mole Talea europeae. N:(The word comes through Middle English from Old Saxon and means earth-thrower. Both N:'mole' and 'mold' are cognates for the first word in the compound.) The term "modiewark", N:seems to now refer to an alternating current field detector. N: N:Jack Campin alerted me to Ewan MacColl's version of a bawdy ballad called "Modiewark", N:collected by Robert Burns. MacColl's tune appears to be essentially the same tune N:as found in the MS, but keyed in Gm, with a singing tempo of 3/8=56, and with N:a number of embellishments for singing. The title is printed (possibly censored) N:as "Nowdiewark" on the Argo record in the discography above. In the 1965 Oak book, N:the title is printed as "Modieward", but this is probably just a misprint.
